Today marks the first day of a new segment on the site that I like to call Product Reviews.
Every week, I will showcase a gluten free product that I think is unique and awesome. Plus, to keep this aligned with the main focus of the blog (gluten-free dining), I will then tell you what restaurants also offer this product as well as what dish it can be found in.
I’ll give you a quick example.
Let’s say you love Udi’s Bread. You could come this site to check out my review for it and on that article you’ll find a complete listing of all the restaurants that serve Udi’s Bread on their menus as well as what dishes you can find them in.
It’s pretty simple, but I truly do feel it would better help you choose restaurants based on your favorite gluten free products and brand preferences.
So with that being said, here’s the first ever product review. Let’s do this!
Tehina by Soom Foods
A few weeks ago I exchanged a few tweets with a pretty cool company that’s really passionate about Tehina, called Soom Foods, founded by 3 sisters originally from Rockville, MD.
This Philadelphia based company sells a product called Tehina, which is 100% high quality Ethiopian sesame seeds that are roasted then pressed.
And the best part about it is that it’s gluten free! (and vegan and peanut free too :))
After seeing that the Tehina in U.S. could not match the authentic quality found in the Tehina from Israel, the Soom Sisters decided to put their entrepreneurial minds together to create a business that imports Tehina from northern Israel for sales in the U.S.
Health Benefits
Today, sesame is one of the healthiest products on the market. It’s a great source of protein, as well as Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Health benefits include reduced bad cholesterol (LDL = bad cholesterol) and increased good cholesterol (HDL = good cholesterol).
Taste
Now in terms of taste, it reminds me of unsalted peanuts.
It’s not chunky but it leaves a semi-thick aftertaste that has a hint of sweetness.
Cooking & Recipes
When it comes to cooking with it, the Tehina goes perfectly in dips, dressings, hummus, smoothies, marinades and even cookies and cakes.
For sweet and savory recipes developed by the Soom Sisters themselves, be sure to check out Soom Food’s Recipe Page. Plus be sure to check out their recipe board on Pinterest!
Restaurants that Serve Tehina by Soom Foods
Currently, there is one restaurant that serves Tehina by Soom Foods, called Zahav Restaurant, in Philadelphia.
Tehina can be found in their hummus.
Now let’s talk gluten free menu.
I gave Zahav a call and they told me that whenever you call to make a reservation, just state that you need to have a gluten free menu and they’ll go ahead and prepare one just for you.
That’s pretty cool if you ask me!
So in conclusion…
If you’re looking for some great Tehina to incorporate into your dish, be sure to check out the find folks at Soom Foods.
