I will never eat at another Applebee’s restaurant. The last time I went to my local one, they couldn’t guarantee me gluten free food. The allergy list thing was confusing……some things on the gluten free list and wheat list differed. If you have a wheat allergy and can’t eat something how could it be safe on the gluten free list? Just my opinion, but never eating there again.
LeRoy Hoover
Be careful eating at Applebee’s. They really don’t understand Gluten Free. Their corn chips and fries are fried along with every other breaded fried product they sell. They think that because the oil is hot it kills the gluten. They don’t understand what cross contamination is.
deborah
I had the same exact problem tonight. I called the Orange City, Fl Apple bees, and the manager told me that all of the chips were fried in the same 3 firers. There was not a fryer set aside for gluten free.
Michelle Tatroe
Last time I was at an Applebees they told me their chips were flour not corn. I would always ask.

Gluten free may be fine for some people but when you are allergic to most everything that a restuarant has, it is very difficult to eat out anywhere. My food allergies are: gluten, wheat, barley, corn, soy, nuts, dairy, seafood, fish, lettuce, onions, mushrooms, pineapple, bananas, cantaloupe and apples. I can only eat chicken and turkey. Eating meat makes me sick. I will be getting tested for more food possible allergies shortly. Most people just stare at me when I tell them my allergies.

I’m not laughing. Because I have so many health conditions and diseases, I am allergic to virtually all food. Some allergies are not severe, so I allow myself to eat that food occasionally. When it’s severe,
I do not eat the particular food ever. Off the top of my head, I am allergic to all foods containing:
gluten, citric acid, pectin, sugar, chocolate, vanilla, any type of hot pepper, some meats, dairy products,
seafood, nuts, MSG, and even vegetables (I’m a vegetarian). You are the first person I’ve heard of
that sounds like you have a list like mine. There are probably 50-100 foods I am not supposed to eat.

Not trusting Applebee’s gluten free menu. Fries are listed as gluten free & my daughter had them. She has been sick since.
Jennie
Just there yesterday and the fries are breaded the manager told me and fried in the same oil as everything else. I explained that could make someone very ill. I was nervous about ordering a salad if fries where listed as gluten free. I wish i would have listened to my instinct and left. The manager talked me into eating the Fiesta Chicken Salad. And now im sick…. wish it a piece of greasy good pizza instead of a salad. UGH I will never go to Applebees again!!!!!
AB
Got very sick from Applebee’s. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant, for someone with sensitivity, Intolerance, and especially Celiac. Not a good place for gluten free.
Carol
Applebee’s either doesn’t have a clue about gluten free or doesn’t care. I asked for a gluten-free menu right away, told the waitress I was gluten free & asked her to put that on my order, & told the manager I was gluten free when he came to our table to tell me I couldn’t get a 1/2 salad?? When they brought my salad to the table, there was a big bread stick laying right on top of it! So then I had to wait for them to bring another salad, while everyone else ate their meals. Why have a gluten-free menu, if your staff are not trained to deal with it. The last time I was there, I ordered a hot fudge sundae for desert and it arrived with an Oreo cookie on top of it – the waitress said well, I asked him if that was gluten free and he said yeah, it should be…..

Gluten free awareness is possibly still the biggest issue today. Yeah cross contamination is a major issue, but it first and foremost starts with the staff and their GF education. If that fails, everything else become useless, in my opinion.
Chris medlar
I really doubt their fries and queso are gf. As stated above they do not have separate prep or cooking area’s for gf food. I like that there is awareness now we just need them to be properly educated.

Last week I went to the Applebee’s in Time Square, New York. They could not assure me that any item on their breakfast would be gluten free.. The waitress suggested a dish of fruit. When it came, It had almost all melon & 2 strawberries cut in tiny pieces. They need to not advertise they have a gluten free menu. I sent the fruit back.
monajay
Oh wow! Thanks to everyone I was about to go right now, but never mind.. What other restaurants do have GLUTEN FREE???
Dennis Moore
Very frustrated with Applebees. They have an excellent soup that they say is gluten-free called Tuscan Bean Soup with Chicken & Sausage. They have it displayed on all their gluten-free menus and on this website as well. The only problem is it seems to be available only one day a week (one restaurant said they only serve it on Tuesdays and another only on Sundays). I’ve had another restaurant tell me they never have it. I’ve totally given up on Applebees. And I agree with others that their staff needs to be better informed. I’ve been given some of the lamest comments by waitresses like, “we only serve gluten-free food on weekends” or “I told the kitchen not to put any butter, cheese, or seasoning on your food because I know you had to be gluten free” or “I told the chef not to put any potatoes on your plate”. I mean, really? Is there any training at all?
Carm
I think you all should call Corp. offices and complain to them. If a lot of people call maybe they would get a GF dietitian to educate them selves. Then it will carry down to managers of all Applebee’s
Kim cox
Hmmmm…I just ordered the salmon plain…and told our waiter I had a gluten allergy.hoping this is OK.n I’m not sick for days….
Joyce
Sorry for those of you who have had bad experiences at Applebees. And even sorrier for those of you with multiple food allergies, that must make eating out pretty much impossible. That said I am fortunate to have had nothing but good experiences at Applebees. When I have questions the alleren book is available to check out any item. I have had the chips and queso many times with no problems. The steak, mashed potatoes, and vegetables were all properly done and delicious. This is one of my favorite places to go. (I am sure every restaurant have its own individual set of issues. I am glad that the Applebees near me are ones that I can eat safely at.)
varenikje
Joyce, it looks like you are the only one here who hasn’t had problems with Applebee’s food having gluten in it. Do you work for Applebee’s maybe?
Amanda
Please add that both the salads listed are without dressing.
varenikje
But they have a list of salad dressings (like Ranch, for example) that are gluten free, right?
mary
The last time I ate at Applebee’s I had a bad experience. I have celiac disease and I found that the wait staff is not knowledgeable about gluten free. I ordered a meal off of the gf menu and I was given the wrong ,but similar, meal that was not gf. When I mentioned it to the manager, he was also confused. The meal had to be remade. Also the chips are not gf. Never going to eat there again.
Joyce Griffie VanPelt
I had 2 bad experiences there as well. It is true that they first thing in am fry the chips in the fryers where there is much cc. Same with the french fries. Order simple salad, half way through I find sesame noodle?????? I will never trust them again. They requested i email them on the Applebees site..I got my automated response with I.D. number. Have emailed several times. No response.I am done with them.
Judy
They have no idea what gluten-free means. In my experience, they leave you to choose. However, they will do substitutions with no problem for sides. I have only a wheat allergy. if I had celiac disease I would never go there.
Dee
The steaks are NOT gluten free according to a phone call to Applebee’s.
Cate
the mushrooms in the bourbon street chicken and shrimp are not gluten free.it’s the same garlic sauteed mushrooms that is listed as a steak topper and contains gluten. but they don’t tell you that when the bourbon street chicken and shrimp is listed on it’s own. i found this out the hard way…
Beth
NONE of Applebee’s steaks are gluten free, as I found out after getting sick from one. They’re all dredged in flour, and a lot of the marinades have flour or soy sauce in them. The Bourbon steak has bourbon in the marinade, which contains gluten. And all of that doesn’t take the cross-contamination issues into account. Much as I enjoyed them previously, they’re proving to just not be a good choice for me now that I can’t eat anything with gluten.
