Well to help make life a little bit easier, here’s a quick reference guide to help you find something delicious and gluten free that you can enjoy, no matter what restaurant you’re at.
(And just to be clear, the ingredients at most restaurants recipes vary so their isn’t a guarantee that the food listed below is gluten free. That’s why it’s always best to ask the restaurant first, or buy this guide before you go out to eat.)
So with that being said, here are some of the best gluten free dishes that you can get at almost any type of restaurant.
Gluten Free Dishes You Can Eat Almost Anywhere
The following will be listed by cuisine and restaurant type.
1. Sushi – Japanese & Asian Restaurants
Sushi, if made with just rice and fish (or egg or shrimp) is almost always guaranteed to be gluten free. However, be sure to avoid any rolls with tempura or rolls with teriyaki sauces (commonly found on eel sushi).
So in order to stay as safe as possible, be sure stay away from sushi rolls and soy sauce. Since soy sauce contains wheat, it’s best to bring your own bottle of gluten free soy sauce (or better, little cute gluten free packets.)
2. Steak – Steakhouses
Most steak that you can find at almost any restaurant is gluten free. The only time a steak won’t be gluten free is when they add a special (non-gluten free) dry rub, seasoning, and topper onto the steak.
So in order to stay as safe and gluten free as possible, be sure to order your steak plain (salt and pepper).
3. Lettuce Wrap Burgers – Burger Joints
Since a lot of burger joints have yet implemented gluten free buns onto their menu, like others have, restaurants have started serving their burgers protein style, or wrapped in lettuce (with no bun of course.)
But if you’re really in the mood for a wheat free burger WITH a bun, then you can always buy gluten free burger rolls and bring them with you to the restaurant.
So in order to stay as safe and gluten free as possible at a burger joint, be sure to order your burger without a bun. Also, make sure that the restaurant doesn’t use bread crumbs in their burger patties, because some restaurants do do this.
4. Plain Salad – Any Restaurant
This is basically a given but plain salads (without dressing and croutons) are almost always gluten free. This only becomes tricky once you start adding the salad dressings and other premium toppings (bacon bites, meats, bleu cheese crumbles, etc.)
So in order to have a gluten free salad, be sure to stick with a plain (non-gourmet salad) with grilled meat (preferably chicken). Also, in terms of salad dressings, going with a vinaigrette will almost guarantee it to be gluten free.
And of course there are delicious salads that you can order with hundreds of gourmet and premium toppings, but it’s not often that you’ll find them at most restaurants, only here.

Tacos (if made with a corn tortilla, NOT a flour one) is almost always gluten free, no matter which Mexican restaurant you go to. It only get’s tricky when it comes to the taco meat. However, if you get a hard shell taco from one of these Mexican restaurants, or better, this one, you’ll be good to go.
